& Catechisms
The Christian church has a rich heritage of creeds, catechisms, and confessions. These confessional standards are subordinate to the Bible, while striving to faithfully summarise its teachings. They are simply a way for the church to declare what it believes and write it down for others to read and confirm in Scripture (2 Tim. 1:13; Titus 1:9).
1689 Baptist Confession of Faith
“This little volume is not issued as an authoritative rule, or code of faith, whereby you are to be fettered, but as an assistance to you in controversy, a confirmation of faith, and a means of edification in righteousness. Here the younger members of the church will have a body of divinity in small compass, and by means of the scriptural proofs, will be ready to give a reason for the hope that is in them.”
– Charles Haddon Spurgeon
The Baptist Catechism
A catechism is a summary of the Christian faith in the form of questions and answers, used for instruction. John Newton, the writer of Amazing Grace, writing of the catechising he received at his mother’s knee says, “Though in the process of time I sinned away all the advantages of these early impressions, yet they were for a great while a restraint upon me; they returned again and again, and it was very long before I could wholly shake them off; and when the Lord at length opened my eyes, I found great benefit from the recollection of them.”
